Role and Responsibilities of MASA

As the national governing body for martial arts in South Africa, Martial Arts South Africa (MASA) holds the authority and responsibility to oversee its affiliated members, ensuring adherence to established standards and policies. This role aligns with the practices of other national sporting federations under the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

  1. Governance and Compliance:
    Settng Standards:
    MASA establishes national standards for governance, conduct, and safety within martial arts organisations.
    Affiliated members are expected to comply with these standards as part of their membership obligations. Monitoring and Oversight: MASA monitors affiliated organisations to ensure they operate within the established guidelines and legal requirements.
  2. Intervention in Cases of Malpractice:
    Investigative Authority:
    MASA can initiate investigations into affiliates if there are allegations or evidence of administrative malpractice, misconduct, or breaches of policy.
    Disciplinary Measures:
    Depending on the severity of the violations, MASA has the power to impose sanctions, which may include warnings, mandates to implement corrective actions, suspension of membership, or, in extreme cases, expulsion from the federation.
  3. Safeguarding and Safety Policies:
    Protecting Participants:
    A core function of MASA is to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, including athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.
    Implementation of Safeguarding Policies:
    Affiliates are required to adopt and enforce safeguarding policies that protect individuals from harm, abuse, or neglect. Non-compliance can trigger intervention from MASA.
  4. Promotion of Fairness and Equality:
    Upholding Ethical Standards:
    MASA strives to maintain a fair and equitable environment within martial arts.
    This includes enforcing codes of conduct that prohibit discrimination, harassment, and unethical behaviour.
    Addressing Grievances:
    MASA provides mechanisms for individuals to report grievances or violations, ensuring
    that concerns are addressed impartially and effectively.
